The Story
Squirrels abound in the great lakes region of northern Ohio. Fox squirrels, black, grey, red...even flying squirrels.
So when I learned my friend and former colleague has no squirrels in her yard, I knew there had to be an explanation.
Turns out she has a pair of Broadwing hawks.
After the kill, a hawk shields its prize in a defensive and protective posture known as a mantling position.
An eyrie is one spelling for the home of a raptor. This home is located about 20 miles from the coast of Lake Erie.
