The Story
Mora Clan is a tribute to my older daughter’s family and their Native American heritage.
Native American cultures view their hair as their most important physical attribute. Taking a scalp symbolized ownership of an enemy’s most prized possession.
The sculpture began with the single most distinctive attribute common to all members of the Mora family…their hair.
A deer track, the single most important animal to Aboriginals of the Great Lakes region, providing food, clothing, and antlers for tools and ceremonial decoration.
The moon permeates my daughter’s psyche and evolved in 'Mora Clan' without conscious planning. Located to the northwest is Polaris, the North Star.
The Big Dipper rotates about the North Star every 24 hours, enabling the Ancients to tell time .
The symbol of eternity loops down beside the Yin-Yang, Eastern symbol for all things opposite, and one she wears in a permanent tattoo.
Throughout history the eagle has served as a sacred sign of strength and courage to indigenous people. It occupies a position of prominence in Mora Clan.
The sculpture is mounted to an arrowhead pointing south to the Trail of Tears, forcing the Cherokee Nation from its land to reservations in the west.
At the tip of the braid is a second small arrowhead pointing southwest to Alabama and Mexico, native roots of the Mora family.
